For Stephanie Thibeault, caring for the environment isn’t just part of her job—it’s personal.

Born and raised in Timmins, Stephanie grew up surrounded by the mining industry that helped shape her hometown. But while many families in the region have deep generational ties to mining, Stephanie’s path was a little different.

“I’m actually one of the first in my family to work in mining,” she says with a smile. “Most of my family worked in forestry, healthcare, government… but I always knew I wanted to do something connected to the land and to this community.”

That connection eventually led her to environmental science—and to a decade-long career supporting responsible mining across Discovery’s Porcupine operations.

A Career Built on Community and Care

Today, Stephanie is the Environmental Manager for Discovery, overseeing a team of 15–20 specialists whose work spans an impressive geographic footprint—from Chapleau through the Timmins region and across Discovery’s Porcupine operations including Borden, Hollinger, Pamour, Dome and Hoyle Pond.

Her team’s mandate is as wide-ranging as the land they cover. On any given day, they might be:

  • Testing surface water and groundwater
  • Assessing air quality and noise
  • Supporting tailings and waste rock management
  • Overseeing reclamation projects
  • Monitoring biodiversity and ecological health
  • Ensuring water released back into the environment is clean and safe

“We take care of environmental performance across both active and inactive sites,” Stephanie explains. “Our work touches everything from engineering to biology. It’s incredibly diverse.”

Energy in the Air

Recently, Stephanie has noticed something new in the air—an energy shift across operations.

“There's definitely a sense of rejuvenation,” she says. “People are excited about where the company is heading. You can feel it within my team and across all sites.”

Discovery’s refreshed direction and identity have sparked renewed optimism—not just among employees, but within the communities who live alongside these operations.

“It’s an exciting time to be part of this transformation,” she says. “There’s momentum, and people want to be part of shaping what comes next.”
