Beehives
Discovery acknowledges the important role bees play on our ecosystem. In 2008, honey bees were introduced on Discovery Porcupine’s Coniaurum reclamation site to promote pollination and plant development. The landscape flourished and spawned into a greater number of healthy bee colonies and increased honey production.
Discovery Porcupine has been supporting local apiculture initiatives for many years, and in 2017, focused on helping to find solutions to mitigate increasing losses in the bee population. The company engaged local area secondary school students in a friendly competition to construct a beehive that could potentially increase the bee winter survival rate thus improving the bee population in northern Ontario. Derived from the project is Ruchers Boreal Apiaries, to which teachers became beekeepers and now maintain the beehives on our reclamation site. You will find the honey produced from these hives at various community events.
